Fire-Retardant Siding Increases the Use of Wood in Demanding Building Projects

Fire protection makes it possible to use wood more and more in different construction. Fire resistance of wood products increases the fire resistance time of the building. Building products are treated in such a way that, in the event of a fire, the processing will slow the burning of the material.

Fire Classification in EU

The fire classification is based on the fire behavior of construction products. The most important issue for firewood construction is the fire classification of surface materials that can affect the spread of fire. Building materials are classified in the EU by fire safety in the Euro Class A-F. Building materials are divided into classes on the basis of their influence on the ignition and diffusion of the fire (categories A1, A2, B, C, D, E, F) and smoke output (s1, s2, s3) and burning dew (d0, d1, d2) . Fire-resistant wooden construction products belong to the B category, which includes only a few construction products with a slight fire effect. In addition, fire classification of building materials always involves determination of smoke formation (s) and burning droplets (d). The flame retardant wood structure product has the highest rating B-s1,d0, which can be obtained by the wood product. The involvement of fire-retardant building material in fire is very limited.

The characteristics of fire-protected wood are as follows:

B = The product has little effect on the development of the fire

s1 = Smoke formation in the event of fire is very low

d0 = No combustible pieces or drops are released from the product

Siparila’s fireproof exterior and interior panels are part of the highest fire rating for wooden construction products. The Reaction to Fire fire rating (B-s1, d0) for wooden construction products makes it possible to use wood in the highest P1 fire class buildings. The buildings are divided into three P1, P2 and P3 fire classification based on fire safety regulations. The fireproof wooden building material is suitable for façades as well as for prefabricated building blocks as well as public wooden buildings such as carpentry and school facade materials.

Industrially applied fire protection guarantees high quality

The fire protection treatment of wood products improves the fire resistance of wood. In the event of a fire, the surface treatment agents form a foam on the surface of the wood which is foamed by high temperature. The foamed surface has a good thermal insulation capability that slows down a significant amount of wood material ignition.

High quality fire-retardant treatment is carried out under industrially controlled conditions. In industrial processing, it is possible to standardize the ambient temperature and humidity conditions and to precisely define the amount of application of the surface treatment agent. An adequate fire-retardant film thickness ensures that the wooden construction product meets its fire resistance requirements. An industrial fire protection treatment has the advantage that the surface treatment agent spreads evenly across all surfaces of the panel.

Topcoat siding has no visible signs of nails

Fire-proof exterior and interior panels are always CE-marked, guaranteeing the quality and safety of the product. The CE marking requires that the fire protection product used is approved by an authorized research institute. Siparila uses water-based fire-retardants in its panels, the application rates of which are closely monitored during the surface treatment process by weighing. Inspecta checks the fire protection process twice a year.

Advantages of industrial fire protection treatment for wooden construction products

  • Enables wood surfaces in P1 fire class buildings
  • Ensures wood processing around the wood panel and verifies the amount of application of the fire retardant to be applied
  • industrially fireproof construction products can save on construction costs
  • Fire protection improves the surface finish of the surface
  • The flame retardant contains preservatives that prevent the growth of mold, algae and other microbes on the surface of the tree. A separate wood preservative is therefore unnecessary.
  • Fire-proof wood-exterior cladding has good weather resistanc

How to increase the efficiency on site

Wood is a durable and sustainable choice for siding material. Trees grow slowly in the Scandinavian soil due to the cold climate, which produces solid trees with tight growth rings and a straight grain. This makes the wood stronger, lighter and more durable than others. Siparila Topcoat siding is made from the top of the tree where the quality of lumber is premium. When running a project there are many details which need attention. Here are few points which can increase the efficiency of the site.

Completely painted exterior siding

When choosing a surface treatment, it is good for the architect to consider the suitability of the surface treatment for industrial production. Completely painted exterior siding panel saves time and costs during the construction phase – the painting on site is left out and the building can be handed over more quickly.

Types of Siding

Uniform outlook for the building

Topcoat siding can hide the seams of the element structures with the outer covering creating a uniform outlook for the building. Pre-painted exterior cladding panels can be installed on a layer to layer as construction progresses. The optimization of the panel lengths and end-matching of the panel reduces the amount of waste material. The concealed cladding paneling enables a nail-less, natural and durable wood surface.

Challenges in fire-retardant tones

When applying fire-retardant film in translucent tones , the challenge is to make a durable, naturally treated wood a durable surface. In order to ensure sufficient thickness of the fire-retardant film, the panels required multiple application times of the paint. In the case of surface treatment, the industrial painting of boards is challenging because one surface always touches the conveyors.

PEFC Certified Multi-Storey Building

Maiha in Seinäjoki is Finland’s first PEFC certified timber block. It is a 5-storey solid wood multi-storey built by Lakea Oy in Seinajoki where the tree is spectacularly presented inside and outside. Maiha is built with Stora Enso’s CLT- space elemental solution and upholstered by Siparila’s TOPCOAT® exterior siding.

Architecture and siding

In Maiha the wood is visible in all parts of the building: outdoors, stairwells and apartments. The block of flats consists of space modules that are made of cross laminated timber (CLT) using space element engineering technology. Maiha’s exterior cladding is made with Siparila’s flame-retardant siding. The color of the facade is inspired by the dark bark. The dark general appearance of the facades is dashed by the red details of the exterior cladding on the surfaces of the individual exterior spaces.

Technical challenges and solution

The exterior siding could not be produced completely painted, because the chosen paint was not suitable for industrial production. When choosing a surface treatment, it is good for the architect to consider the suitability of the surface treatment for industrial production. Completely painted exterior cladding panel saves time and costs during the construction phase – the painting on site is left out and the building can be handed over more quickly. In Maiha the exterior siding was fastened already in the element factory. Because of that siding was fastened by nailing it on the top (nails are visible and need to be painted. If the siding would have been installed on the side, there would not be any need for painting).

Unique Ideas For Your Exterior Siding

The exterior of your home or building is just as important as its foundation or its interiors. As such, many people spend plenty of time researching options in order to find just the right exterior siding for their home or commercial building. When you select prefinished wood siding as your exterior siding, you’ll have a wide variety of options to choose from when it comes to improving the look of your home. Adding things like textures, definition, and colour can be essential to creating an impressive exterior for your home.

While house siding used to only be viewed as a tool to protect and reinforce your home, design experts are now looking to high-quality sidings, such as prefinished wood siding, to add that extra aesthetic appeal. Whether you use exterior siding to highlight your entryway or to show off your home’s unique features, the right siding can elevate your home to a whole new status.

8 Exterior Siding Options To Consider

For those looking for unique ideas for house siding that will help you create a lasting, durable, and beautiful look for your home, take a look at the suggestions below for some inspiration.

  1.  Siding installation doesn’t have to be in the standard horizontal format. Try installing siding in different directions for an eye-catching look.
  2. When you want something a little different than traditional lap siding, consider the beauty of board and batten.
  3. Add the illusion of height by starting your prefinished wood siding a few feet off the ground and using a contrasting material along the base.
  4. Emphasize the trim. Sometimes it’s not the house siding that’s the main attraction, but the trim that helps brings it all together. A heavy white trim can provide an excellent contrast to neutral-toned or painted siding and give any exterior a fresh, updated look.
  5. Sometimes it’s not enough to use simply two colours to bring a property to life. Coloured siding, along with stone can present a dynamic and impressive appearance.
  6. Bring visual interest by using both thinner plank siding and a more traditional siding width.
  7. Choose natural colours and highlight the beauty of the wood. Your home won’t look like every other house in the neighbourhood and you can have 15 careless years in maintenance.
  8. In addition to changing the direction of the exterior siding over the different areas of the home, you can also change the type of siding by using board and batten in some sections, mixed with traditional lap siding in others.

Wooden Artwork in Pro Nemus

Modern wood architecture in Metsä Group’s Pro Nemus Visitor Center

Metsä Group’s Pro Nemus Visitor Center was opened in the beginning of June around the Äänekoski’s factory. In this completely wood constructed building, designers and industrialists sought solutions that were suitable for industrial construction but did not impede the architect’s hands.

UKI Architects Ltd. designed the Visitor Center as a continuation of the earlier designed  biotech plant.

Siparila siding installation is fast and easy

We wanted to make Pro Nemus a showroom for the Finnish forest, where the tree is visible and felt in  all the details of the building. The centrepiece of the Visitor Center is made of Metsä Wood’s Kerto® LVL while the outside is clad in Siparila’s Topcoat siding. Together these products, whose strong features allow longevity of the construction and the creation of  spacious and spectacular spaces, says architect Ulla Passoja of UKI Architects.

The wider use of wood architecture requires new solutions

For a young generation of architects, building with wood is a matter of heart. We want to design architecture that incorporates the forest in a sustainable way and find new solutions made possible by innovative wooden construction products. However, maintaining a connection with tradition and local influence is important in preserving the originality, says Passoja.

Siparila topcoat wood siding has secret nailing profiles

According to Passoja, wood-based architecture needs to expanded to include high-quality wood-based products and a wide range of different surface finishing options. It is also important to preserve the authenticity of wood, as many architects want to use untreated wood to express a rugged and natural look in the buildings they plan. The Pro Nemus Visitor Center is an encouraging example of the beautiful possibilities in modern wooden architecture.

Siparila prefinished wood siding

The use of  wood in architecture encourages increased knowledge of sustainable wood-based solutions and highly prefinished wood siding with high-quality surface treatment, fire safety, and moisture resistance, says Passoja.

Siding is an important part of the visitor center’s appearance

Pro Nemus represents the tip of modern wood construction in Finland. Modernity will be highlighted in the sculpted form of the building through basis of design and innovative material selections. The design endeavors to incorporate the wood in  all the design’s surfaces. The 42 mm thick and nearly 300 mm wide, exquisite Siparila Topcoat exterior siding is a significant element of the building’s appearance, says  Passoja.

Siparila Topcoat is a prefinished wood siding

Pro Nemus is completely matte and distinct from other factory buildings. This unique surface treatment was achieved with a new, permanent paint treatment developed by Siparila; unlike conventional overlay painting this new system  maintains the wood’s surface grain. This paint treatment also extends the maintenance intervals required of the wood compared to other exterior wood products. The prefinished wood siding made of glued wood has the advantage of hidden clamping, which improves the weather resistance of the façade as the piling rods that could collect water are hidden.

The most important criteria for choosing an exterior finishing solution, especially for a visitor center, are durability and aesthetics. We cut the size, profile and surface treatment of the outer sheath panel in close cooperation with Siparila. It was especially important for us to keep the feel of a genuine wood in the exterior. The outer coat should look and feel from the wood both from afar and up close, emphasizes the Passoja.
