Demanding architectural projects are Siparila's core competence. For a wellness centre built around the hot springs in Bozeman, they were looking for an exterior cladding panel that could withstand extreme conditions, and found it in Finland. For more than 100 years, the hot springs at the edge of Yellowstone National Park have attracted visitors to relax and rejuvenate in natural hot springs pools with temperatures ranging from 59 to 106 degrees Celsius. A small hot springs pool, enjoyed by few in the late 19th century, has been expanded into a wellness oasis where visitors can enjoy the warm waters of 12 pools and the relaxing baths of two saunas.

Exterior cladding for challenging climate conditions

The recent expansion of hot springs in Bozeman is part of a wider trend of modernisation in cities in the western US. The design team at 45 Architecture, the design firm responsible for the expansion project, sought a sustainable and natural-looking alternative to the challenging climate conditions of the Rocky Mountains. Siparila took up the challenge and set out to develop a solution with a natural-looking, yet extremely durable exterior cladding panel, in line with the architects' vision. The raw material chosen for the cladding was thermally modified spruce to ensure durability. The exterior cladding panels were finished in a durable Roasted Wheat shade, which preserved the natural look of the wood and provided excellent protection against UV radiation and moisture.
