Kittilä Airport - KOO panel interior

The terminal extension at Kittilä Airport is part of Finavia's EUR 55 million investment programme at Lapland airports. It aims to provide more flexibility to cope with the peaks and troughs in tourism in Lapland. In addition to the new terminal section, the airport apron was extended in two directions and the number of aircraft stands was increased. The new airfield is about 75% larger than the old one.

The terminal extension comprises 2000 m² of new space. Passenger comfort has been enhanced by the construction of a new café-restaurant and a children's playground. The surface material at Kittilä Airport is Finnish birch. The KOO interior panel, designed by interior architect Kari Lappalainen, adds elegance to the space with a simple design language. The KOO interior panels are a massive 20 mm thick and 95 mm wide. The natural lightness of birch was emphasised by treating the panels with a white, translucent finish. As this is a public space, the panels were treated with Tikkurila Fontefire fire retardants. The interior panels meet the highest fire rating for wood, B-s1, d0.
