Kainuu Hospital

The first phase of the new hospital in Kainuu will cover an area of around 30 000 gross square metres, which is about three quarters of the area of the new hospital under construction. Following the commissioning and moving-in phase, patient care in the newly completed facilities will start in late January 2020. Thanks to an efficient design, the 46,000 square metres of the new hospital will replace several buildings that have reached the end of their useful life, with around 52,000 square metres of space. In terms of architectural design, the new hospital in Kainuu represents today's hospital design, where functions are compactly close together and easily accessible to patients.

Kainuu Hospital is the first hospital project in Finland to be implemented using the alliance model, commissioned by the Kainuu Social and Health Care Group. From the very beginning, the client wanted to use wood in construction. The building is constructed using external wall and eaves elements that are industrially fire-protected on all four sides. The façade of the first phase of the hospital building has around 450 timber-framed and clad elements. In total, about 10 000 square metres of Finnish spruce have been used.

The wooden panels of the façade play with different shades of grey, which is a departure from the usual white layout of hospitals. The fire-resistant wood surfaces vary from light grey 619X, grey 571X and dark grey 565X. On some walls, the light grey surface is rhythmically matched with a warm shade of grey (569X), which is used on the window trim to change the direction of the panelling. The panel profiles vary between a slanted red UTW 28×120 mm panel and a straight red UTS 28×160 mm panel. Wood is also strongly visible on the surfaces of the hospital interior.
