A living surface treatment imitating patinated tar

Sokos Hotel Bomba is located in Nurmes, next to the Karelian village of Bomba, built 40 years ago. The hotel's exterior and the interior design of the hotel rooms and spa were to be renewed, and the facade was to reflect the traditional Finnish building tradition.

Architect Jaakko Puro's goal was to find a surface treatment that mimics the old, patinated tar surface. Siparila took up the challenge and developed a quick-to-install, durable and industrially painted PAANU cladding inspired by traditional plywood panels. The result is a mysterious dark ambience, enhanced by earthy tones.

The size of one pile was chosen to be 20 mm thick, 215 mm wide and 720 mm long. The weather resistance of the cladding was improved by designing the panels to allow for concealed fixing. In this way, the nails will not break the pre-painted surface and water will not be able to damage the wood through the nail holes. The stakes were surface treated three times, as they needed to be completely finished. This meant that the façade did not need to be refinished after installation, saving costs and speeding up the construction process.

The spa hotel has 113 rooms and the spa can accommodate 170 guests. Sokos Hotel Bomba is surrounded by 11 hectares of scenic North Karelia on the beautiful Pielinen shore.
